English Grammar: 8 Contoh Penggunaan Present Participle – Setelah KBI membahas materi gerund sebelumnya. Kali ini KBI akan membahas tentang penggunaan present participle. Present participle adalah kata yang dibentuk dengan menambahkan akhiran -ing pada bentuk dasar dari verb. Contohnya play + -ing = playing dan read + -ing = reading. Penggunaan present participle juga sangat bermacam-macam. Berikut ini 8 contoh penggunaan present participle.

  1. THE PRESENT PARTICIPLE AS PART OF THE CONTINUOUS FORM OF A VERB
    contoh:
    I am working.
    He was singing.
    They have been walking.
    We will be staying.
    She would have been expecting me.
  2. THE PRESENT PARTICIPLE AFTER VERBS OF MOVEMENT & POSITION
    Contoh:
    She went shopping.
    I go running every morning.
    He lay looking up at the clouds.
    She came running towards me.
  3. THE PRESENT PARTICIPLE AFTER VERBS OF PERCEPTION
    Pola untuk penggunaannya adalah verb + object + present participle. Ada perbedaan dalam arti ketika kalimat tersebut mengandung zero infinitive daripada participle. Infinitive mengacu pada tindakan lengkap sementara present participle ini mengacu pada tindakan yang sedang berlangsung .
    contoh:
    I heard someone singing.
    He saw his friend walking along the road.
    I can smell something burning!
    I watched the birds flying away.
  4. THE PRESENT PARTICIPLE AS AN ADJECTIVE
    contoh:
    It was an amazing film.
    Dark billowing clouds often precede a storm.
    He was trapped inside the burning house.
    Many of his paintings show the setting sun.
  5. THE PRESENT PARTICIPLE WITH THE VERBS SPEND AND WASTE
    Pola yang dipakai adalah verb + time/money expression + present participle.
    contoh:
    My boss spends two hours a day travelling to work.
    Don’t waste time playing computer games!
    They’ve spent the whole day shopping.
    I wasted money buying this game.
  6. THE PRESENT PARTICIPLE WITH THE VERBS CATCH AND FIND
    Pola dengan kata kerja ini adalah verb + object + present participle. Dengan kata catch , participle selalu mengacu pada suatu tindakan yang menyebabkan kejengkelan atau kemarahan. Hal ini tidak terjadi dengan kata find, yang tanpa perasaan/emosi apapun.
    contoh:
    If I catch you stealing my apples again, there’ll be trouble!
    Don’t let him catch you reading his letters.
    I caught him going through my bag.
    We found some money lying on the ground.
    They found their mother sitting in the garden.
  7. THE PRESENT PARTICIPLE FOR TWO ACTIONS AT THE SAME TIME
    Ketika dua tindakan terjadi bersamaan , dan dilakukan oleh subjek yang sama, kita bisa menggunakan present participle untuk menggambarkan salah satu tindakan. Ketika salah satu tindakan terjadi sangat cepat setelah tindakan lain dilakukan oleh subjek yang sama , kita dapat mengungkapkan tindakan pertama dengan present participle.
    contoh:
    Whistling to himself, he walked down the road. = He whistled to himself as he walked down the road.
    They went laughing out into the snow. = They laughed as they went out into the snow.
    Dropping the gun, she put her hands in the air. = She dropped the gun and put her hands in the air.
    Putting on his coat, he left the house. = He put on his coat and left the house.
  8. THE PRESENT PARTICIPLE TO EXPLAIN A REASON
    Present participle ini dapat digunakan sebagai pengganti frase/phrase dimulai dengan as, since, or because. Dalam penggunaan ini present partisiple menjelaskan penyebab atau alasan suatu tindakan.
    contoh:
    Feeling hungry, he went into the kitchen and opened the fridge.
    Being poor, he didn’t spend much on clothes.
    Knowing that his mother was coming, he cleaned the flat.
    He whispered, thinking his brother was still asleep.
